The explorers were always reminded that they were not the first people in this land, though they didn't see any Aboriginal people. They came across Aboriginal shelters and fires, and they often felt they were being followed. One night, the dogs ran off into the bush barking at a noise. The explorers thought the noise was made by an Aborigine trying to spear them by the campfire light. On another occasion, they thought they heard an Aborigine chopping wood.
